A Journey to the Past

Wear an entirely unique piece of 2,000-year-old history.

For all you history buffs out there, or if you know someone who loves old things or reflecting on the past, this is the jewelry for you. The Mediterranean Artists give us the opportunity to carry the past with us by wearing it as a beautiful accessory. All their pieces are sterling silver and come with a delicate chain to give emphasis to the Roman glass itself. The best part is that we just received a huge shipment of new pieces!

With all the beautiful sparkling jewelry around us, we were inspired to research ancient Roman glasswork. We stumbled upon some great info on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s website.

We learned that the glass in this unique jewelry began life as a vase, jug, or vessel (which is what you see above). They were commonly used as tableware or to hold expensive perfumes, oils, and medicines. In fact, glass was so widespread that it was an aspect of nearly every part of everyday life, from a woman’s morning beauty rituals to business activities to the evening meal.

Uncovered from ancient Roman archaeological sites in modern-day Israel, each fragment has been textured and colored by centuries of wind and weather. This weathering results in beautiful iridescent colors called “patina. Each bears the marks of not only its past life as a household or temple object but also the very earth in which it rested until being transformed into a unique accent.

How amazing is that?!
